We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…
Kevin Phillips is not surprised to see a report saying that West Brom are ready to cash in on striker Kenneth Zohore this summer.
According to the Telegraph, the Baggies will listen to offers for the 26-year-old ahead of next season, a year after they paid £8million on acquiring his services from Cardiff City.
Since joining Albion, Zohore has scored just five goals in 20 appearances across all competitions with only one of those goals coming from open play in the Championship.
Phillips does not believe that Zohore had many opportunities to show his worth at The Hawthorns but can understand why Slaven Bilic would want to move on the Danish striker.
“West Brom got promoted by playing a fairly similar side throughout the season. Up top, Charlie Austin and Hal Robson-Kanu got most of the games and Zohore was playing a bit-part role,” Phillips told West Brom News.
“In one sense, you have to say he didn’t get a fair crack at the whip. Unfortunately, he was competing with players who were in form. You have to bide your time and when you get an opportunity you have to take it. Bilic clearly saw Kenneth as his back-up.
“I’m not surprised to hear they’ll look to move him on and free up some cash. That’s an area of the squad they’ll concentrate on improving. If they can get him off the wage bill, that will help to get someone in.”
Zohore is the youngest of West Brom’s three first-team strikers and also cost the club the most in terms of his transfer fee.
However he simply failed to deliver the goods when he was handed opportunities and only really scored against far weaker sides and from the penalty spot.
His penalty goals against Derby and Reading were crucial and got West Brom two points that saw them win promotion.
But that doesn’t cover up what has been a huge waste of money on behalf of the club and a sale this summer makes a lot of sense.
In other West Brom news, the Baggies are keen to sign this Tottenham player on loan.
