Mark Jenkins details how much West Brom have had to pay squad in promotion bonuses

Former chief executive Mark Jenkins has confirmed that West Brom spent almost £20million on their squad bonuses after promotion to the Premier League.

The Baggies limped across the line finishing second, and the relief was clear to see in the celebrations at the Hawthorns.

There is no doubt part of those scenes from each player were also them realising they’d get their share of that huge sum – something which was very well-earned.

Jenkins retired almost a week ago but claimed that West Brom have been forced to use some of the money earned from promotion already.

“Getting promoted cost the club nearly £20million in bonuses to players and in clauses, we had to pay other clubs in transfer agreements,” he told the Express and Star.

“You can say that’s OK because you got promoted – and that’s right, that is how you should run your business.

“But that £20million has got to come from somewhere. That money comes out of the Premier League money.”

Jenkins did also mention that sum includes transfer clauses that the club have been forced to pay during the season.

The Baggies will be looking to earn the majority of that back in player sales over the summer, with the likes of Kieran Gibbs, Oliver Burke and Kenneth Zohore all on the chopping block.

All three could bring significant fees, especially Gibbs who saw his wages double after promotion – another example of how easy it is to spend more money in the top-flight.
