National journo: PL club have ‘won the race’ for reported West Brom target
Sheffield United have “won the race” to sign West Brom target Antonee Robinson from Wigan Athletic, according to the Mirror journalist David Anderson.
The 23-year-old left-back has been linked with an exit from the Latics for some time, and has seen the prospect of an exit cemented by his current employers going into administration and being relegated from the Championship because of the subsequent points deduction.
The Sun journalist Alan Nixon reported as far back as June that Albion were planning a swoop for the player, who is available for less than £2 million because of a clause written into his contract.
And it would appear that the Blades have capitalised on that cut-price deal to pip the Baggies to the post in the race for his signature.
Writing on his personal Twitter account, Brown said: “Sheffield United have won the race to sign Antonee Robinson from Wigan for £2million after reaching agreement with the Latics’ administrators, beating off competition from the likes of West Ham and West Brom.”
This is a big blow for the Baggies.
Robinson is an exciting young talent, and Albion are likely to need a new left-back after having made the decision to sell Kieran Gibbs in the coming weeks, according to the Telegraph.
The Wigan man would have been available for an absolute steal, and with seven international caps to his name already for the USA, it’s clear that he has good pedigree too.
If this is true, and if we have missed out on him, it will be a real shame.
In other West Brom news, this rising star has rejected offers from rival clubs to stay at the Baggies.
