Sky Sports deliver update after West Brom reportedly table bid for prolific striker

Dundee United manager Micky Mellon has denied reports that West Brom have tabled a bid for their star striker Lawrence Shankland.

Shankland helped Dundee United to get promoted to the Scottish Premiership last season with 24 goals in 26 league games.

In the two previous seasons, he’s scored 24 (Championship) and 26 (League One) goals.

His form has put him in esteemed company – he’s been shortlisted for the Scottish Football Writers’ Association’s Player of the Year award, along with Odsonne Edouard and Alfredo Morelos.

However, reports of a bid from West Brom are wide of the mark if Mellon is telling the truth.

The update was delivered on Sky Sports Scotland on Tuesday morning.

Too soon for Shankland?

Shankland is starting to turn heads but this season will be absolutely key for his progress.

He’s never played as high as the Premiership before but if he can keep scoring at the same rate then big clubs will come knocking.

It’s impressive to be shortlisted for the Scottish Football Writers’ Association’s Player of the Year award after playing in the Scottish Championship.

And he’s sitting alongside strikers who have been talked about as having £20m price tags on their heads.

Former Rangers man Andy Halliday has said that his old club should try to sign Shankland.

We’re going to need more convincing. The standard of Scottish football is weak, especially below the Premiership.

Even the Premiership is far below the Premier League.

Shankland is impressing at the moment but we’d like to see him play a few more games in the Premiership before moving for him.
