View: West Brom can wave goodbye to reported target, Sky journo details £25m valuation
West Brom are in the market for strikers this summer, with the Premier League only one month away from kicking off.
A number of names have been thrown into the hat already, with reinforcements needed for Hal Robson-Kanu and Charlie Austin desperately.
Slaven Bilic has held talks with Sheffield United forward Callum Robinson, but he will want an out-and-out number nine as well.
The Athletic’s Steve Madeley recently reported that Brentford forward Ollie Watkins is a clear target for the Baggies after they missed out on promotion last week.
The reliable journalist did cast doubt over any potential move though, with an £18million price-tag labelled too steep for the Albion to match.
If £18million was deemed too steep, then the latest update from Sky Sports journalist Rob Dorsett all but ends the Baggies chances of signing him.
“Dean Smith prioritising Brentford striker Ollie Watkins in attempts to increase Aston Villa’s firepower,” he wrote.
“Crystal Palace and Sheffield United are also keen, but asking price of £25m might be too steep.”
West Brom can wave goodbye to their chances of signing Watkins, afterall, if his priority is with Aston Villa, he wouldn’t be welcome at the Hawthorns.
Watkins was phenomenal last season, there is no hiding that though. The young forward has that predator instinct in front of goal, and his sheer pace makes him a nightmare for any defence.
Something that would have impressed Bilic too is his ability to chase back and defend for his side too, similar to Robson-Kanu.
Either way, he won’t be at the Hawthorns next season and we must come to that realisation quickly and start looking elsewhere.
