Nixon: Newly-promoted PL side make ‘dramatic’ late play for West Brom-linked defender

Fulham have made a late move to snatch Wigan left-back Antonee Robinson from West Brom and Sheffield United, according to the Sun.

The story has come from their transfer expert Alan Nixon who said it was a “dramatic” late move from the newly-promoted club.

Nixon had previously said that the Baggies had a “big chance” of signing Robinson if they won promotion.

Robinson is the latest player up for grabs from Wigan, who are facing life in League One under administrators after being docked 12 points and relegated from the Championship.

Now, Nixon has written, “[Robinson] is on the verge of securing a transfer to the Premier League.

“Scott Parker’s top-flight new boys are willing to pay the fixed fee of around £1.5 million for Robinson.

“And they are offering better terms than rivals Sheffield United and West Brom.”

Robinson is a bargain

We’d love to see Robinson at West Brom and if reports of a £25m summer budget are true, then Slaven Bilic needs to snap up bargains like this.

Wigan are in a dreadful state and face losing a number of their best players at a cut-price as administrators try to raise funds quickly to pay wages and keep the club afloat.

Robinson was on the brink of a £10m move to AC Milan in January before it was pulled from him right at the last.

The 23-year-old played 38 games for Wigan this season and was part of an amazing turn in form since Christmas.

That almost saved the club but they couldn’t overcome the 12-point penalty and went down on the final day of the season. A failed appeal put the nail in the coffin for the crisis-hit club.

The one thing in West Brom’s favour is that Robinson would have to battle play-off hero Joe Bryan for a place in the Fulham first-team.

West Brom need a new left-back for the Premier League, with Kieran Gibbs struggling for game-time and Conor Townsend untested.

We think Robinson can take the step up to the top-flight and we’d like to see Bilic going back in with better terms.

In other West Brom news, this rising star has rejected offers from rival clubs to stay at the Baggies.
