West Brom to announce permanent deal for 19/20 loan star soon – report
West Brom will announce Matheus Pereira’s permanent switch to the club “soon”, according to the Express & Star.
The Athletic journalist Steve Madeley reported earlier this week that “there are some contractual issues” that need to be sorted out before the 24-year-old’s permanent move from Sporting CP to The Hawthorns is finalised.
However, it now seems that those problems are set to be overcome and West Brom fans can finally receive the Pereira news that they have all been waiting for.
Pereira was outstanding for West Brom last season as they finished second in the Championship and secured automatic promotion to the Premier League, scoring eight goals and supplying 20 assists in 42 league appearances.
The Brazilian attacker is clearly worth more than the reported £8.25million fee that the Baggies are paying to sign him from Sporting – something which Kevin Phillips believes is a bargain.
Speaking to West Brom News in March, Phillips said: “For £8.25million, wow. That is a snip, isn’t it? He’s probably a £15-20million player.”
Based on what we have seen so far of Pereira, Phillips is right.
It will be interesting to see how he gets on in the Premier League but we have seen with players like Harvey Barnes and James Maddison in the past couple of seasons that attacking midfielders who shine in the Championship usually go on to shine in the top-flight.
That’s not to say it won’t be easy for Pereira.
He needs to cut out the theatrics and going down to ground easily because with VAR playing a role in all Premier League matches, he might not be able to get away with things he got away with in the Championship.
In other West Brom news, Charlie Austin has been raving about this Albion youngster after he was sent out on loan.
