Reliable journalist responds to WBA fan after reported target comes top priority elsewhere

Wigan Athletic goalkeeper David Marshall has become a clear target for West Brom this summer.

The Sun first reported recently that the Latics stopper and Swansea’s Steven-Andreas Benda were two options being considered at the Hawthorns.

Slaven Bilic is keen to add more competition for Sam Johnstone who has completed every single minute of the last two seasons.

The Sun journalist Alan Nixon has now claimed that Championship side Derby have made Marshall their top target for their keeper spot over this summer.

This update alerted many West Brom fans, who started to question if their side were still interested in the Scottish international.

Nixon responded with a less-than-encouraging update for the Albion fans who were hoping to see a new keeper arrive sooner rather than later.

“He would play at Derby…” he wrote on his personal Twitter account.

One more off the list?

This seems to be a regular occurrence for the Baggies.

In the first report by the Sun, there were three keepers on the shortlist including Marshall, Benda and even Joe Hart.

Then came the links with Croatian Ivo Grbic who has now decided to join Atletico Madrid rather than the Baggies [Marca].

Tuesday also saw Hart move to Tottenham, so if Marshall chooses Derby rather than the Baggies, they are back to square one again.

That leaves Benda of Swansea. Given that he hasn’t made his senior debut for the Welsh club, the Baggies could be better off finally giving the chance to Alex Palmer who has earned a new contract after impressing at Plymouth.
