Reliable journalist admits ‘no truth’ behind reports linking WBA with ‘priority’ £10m move

West Brom were in the running for Southampton striker Michael Obafemi, according to the Sun.

The newspaper reported on their website that the Baggies were set to rival Aston Villa for the Republic of Ireland international.

It was suggested that it would take a £10million fee to tempt Ralph Hassenhuttl into allowing Obafemi through the exit doors.

It may not happen at all, with the Express and Star journalist Joseph Masi sharing an update on the reported move on Wednesday.

Masi admitted that there was no truth in the reports linking Obafemi with a move to the Hawthorns this month.

“The Express & Star understands there is no truth to reports linking Albion with a move for Southampton striker Michael Obafemi,” he wrote.

“Stories emerged over the weekend suggesting the Baggies were keen on signing the 20-year-old forward. But while a striker is a priority this summer, it is understood Obafemi is not a target.”

It is no surprise that Slaven Bilic is looking for new options in the final third, with both Charlie Austin and Hal Robson-Kanu, not the youngest.

Both hit double figures last season, but they far from fill us with confidence that they could tackle the Premier League.

Obafemi didn’t fill us with confidence when analysing his last campaign either. The 20-year-old only scored three and supplied two assists, nowhere near enough.

The Baggies need a striker who can hit double figures next season if they stand a chance of staying up, and Bilic will need to act quick.
