‘Unbelievable’ – Robin van Persie claims player who struggled at WBA now ‘world-class’

One story that will continue to be told at West Brom is the so-called failure of Serge Gnabry.

The German international never quite hit-the-ground running when sealing a loan move to the Hawthorns from Arsenal as a young winger.

Now at Bayern Munich, Gnabry has almost won everything he can do in football and is on the verge of success in the Champions League after the 8-2 thrashing of Barcelona.

Robin van Persie played with Gnabry back at the Emirates Stadium and has recently namechecked the Baggies when referencing his “unbelievable” transformation.

“Unbelievable, right,” he told BT Sports.

“That he struggled so much at West Bromwich Albion and he’s now a world-class player at Bayern Munich.

“That’s down to him obviously, he’s a joy to watch.”

We believe the early setbacks of Gnabry were much down to Arsenal rather than the Baggies, given that they let him leave after failing in their development.

Looking at Gnabry’s time in the midlands, it wasn’t exactly packed with action.

The 25-year-old only lasted half of one season and was shipped back to London in February after joining in August.

Gnabry completed only 12 minutes in the Premier League, and two matches in the League Cup. He actually played more for the under-23s, and only registered one assist during that time [Transfermarkt].

Those numbers prove he needed to do more to stake his claim to make it at the Hawthorns, and that he has improved naturally, with nothing to do with West Brom – people and pundits alike should forget about that spell.
