‘Terrible decision’, ‘Disgusting’ – Many WBA fans react to ‘stupid’ exit update
West Brom winger Jonathan Leko looks as if he is on the cusp of of completing a move to local rivals Birmingham City.
According to Sky Sports, the wide man is set for a medical at St. Andrews imminently, and could leave his boyhood club for as little as £1 million after a fee was agreed between the two sides.
Sheffield Wednesday were also credited with an interest in the 21-year-old, but look as if they have been beaten to the punch by the Blues.
And many Albion fans are more than a little disappointed by the move.
In a variety of tweets, supporters claimed that the fee being touted was “disgusting” and represented a “terrible decision” from Baggies chiefs.
We’d be tempted to agree too.
Leko has not exactly set the world alight during his time at The Hawthorns, but he has shown plenty of promise, and did okay during his time with Charlton Athletic last season, before being hampered by injury.
Five goals and four assists in 21 outings is not a bad return at all, especially when you consider the fact that he was playing for a side who ultimately ended up being relegated.
Granted, he looked a long way off the pace of other West Brom talents such as Grady Diangana last term, registering a cross accuracy that was 13.1% worse and a dribble success rate that was inferior by 5.5%, as per Wyscout.
But even taking into consideration, £1 million is a low price – even for a player entering the last year of his contract.
The truth is that it probably is the right time for Leko to move on from the Hawthorns, but it’s hard to shake the feeling the Baggies might have sold themselves a little short.
