West Brom offered academy product in player-plus-cash deal to sign 22y/o – report

West Brom offered Jonathan Leko in a player-plus-cash deal for QPR’s Eberechi Eze earlier this week, according to the Daily Mail.

QPR were one of the clubs who registered an interest in signing 21-year-old Leko so the Baggies tried to use the Hawthorns academy product as a makeweight in a deal.

However, Albion now seem set to miss out on Crystal Palace-bound Eze while QPR are set to fail in their pursuit of Leko with him reportedly set to undergo a medical with Birmingham City.

The Mail reports that Leko is on his way to St George’s Park for the first stage of his medical examinations ahead of a £1million move to Birmingham.

QPR do still have an interest in the England Under-20 international but it is understood talks are at an advanced stage for him to join up with Aitor Karanka at St Andrew’s.

Leko missed the second half of last season with a serious knee injury but performed well in the 21 appearances he made on loan at Charlton building up to his setback.

He scored five goals and supplied four assists while playing for Lee Bowyer’s side.

Speaking about his loan spell to the Express & Star in February, Leko said: “Going out on loan helped so much and I appreciate the opportunity a lot.

“It’s helped me boost my game and become an all-round better player.”

Leko definitely showed signs of improvement in London and hopefully once he’s recovered from his knee injury, he’ll be ready to pick up where he left off in the Second City.
