Report – West Brom offered chance to sign PL hitman who hit double figures in 19/20
West Brom have been offered the chance to sign Watford striker Troy Deeney, according to the Daily Mail.
The Hornets suffered relegation from the top flight this summer, and it is understood that the 32-year-old could be willing to end his 10-year association with the club to remain in the Premier League next term.
The Mail suggest that Slaven Bilic is an admirer of Deeney, but is keen to lower the average age of his squad this summer, and could therefore seek other options in the transfer market.
One name that has been put forward is that of Huddersfield Town hitman Karlan Grant, with the report suggesting that the Croatian is a “huge fan” of the 22-year-old.
For his part, Deeney is currently captain at Vicarage Road, and hit double figures in the Premier League last term with 10 strikes in 27 outings.
This is definitely a difficult one for the Baggies.
On the one hand, you can understand why Bilic would be keen to lower the average age of his squad, and the manager should be commended for taking such a long-term view of his project with the club.
On the other, the opportunity to sign a player of Deeney’s proven effectiveness doesn’t come around every day.
The veteran striker may not be everybody’s cup of tea, but there’s no denying that he knows where the back of the net is, and how to get under the skin of a top flight defence.
47 Premier League goals in 163 appearances is not a bad record at all, especially for a player who has perpetually operated in the lower half of the table.
On balance, this one could come down to pragmatism.
If the price is right, and if Deeney is keen, we would be in favour of a move – even if it was just as a short-term solution until a better long-term candidate can be found.
