West Brom leading the race for 20-year-old midfielder – report
West Brom are leading the race to sign Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher this summer, according to the Sun.
According to the report on their website, the Baggies are set to seal a temporary switch for the 20-year-old, who has impressed at Charlton and Swansea recently.
Chelsea are keen to tie Gallagher down to a new long-term contract first at Stamford Bridge, something which could delay the move.
Slaven Bilic is said to be confident that Gallagher can add much-needed sparks to his midfield next season after a number of options left the Hawthorns.
Filip Krovinovic is expected to return to the Baggies yet again, with Matheus Pereira the only loanee to make his move permanent so far.
The futures of both Callum Robinson and Grady Diangana are less straight forward, and both have left massive gaps in midfield in this pre-season.
With the Premier League two weeks away, the introduction of Gallagher could kickstart a flurry of signings at the Hawthorns.
Gallagher was superb in the Championship last season and could have sealed a switch to the Baggies rather than Swansea in January.
Birmingham Live suggested that move didn’t happen due to lack of assurances over weekly playing time – something which must have changed now.
The 20-year-old may not have scored in his 21 appearances for Swansea, but he did deliver six assists as he made the playmaker position his own.
It will be interesting to see how he fits in at the Hawthorns, with a partnership alongside Pereira very exciting.
