Exclusive: Kevin Phillips urges West Brom to take ‘gamble’ on int’l ‘powerhouse’, talks reported
We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…
Kevin Phillips has claimed that Celtic defender Kristoffer Ajer would be a “good addition” for West Brom this summer.
Speaking exclusively to West Brom News, the former Baggies hitman claimed that the 22-year-old is a “powerhouse” who would improve a priority area for Slaven Bilic ahead of the new Premier League season.
The Athletic reported earlier in the week that Albion have held talks with the Hoops over a potential summer swoop for the Norway international.
And Phillips thinks that he would be a good signing for his former club.
Speaking to West Brom News, when asked whether Ajer could be a hit in England, he said: “If he comes down and does what Virgil van Dijk did, then yeah.
“It’s always a slight gamble when you step out of the Scottish league, we’ve seen it before. But players have also come down and done exceptionally well. Obviously van Dijk is a shining example – it can be done.
“I’ve said all along that any team that gets promoted, you need to look at the spine of the team. Certainly West Brom, a striker and a centre-half are probably the two that Slaven is looking at.
“I think that would be a good addition. He’s a big powerhouse, and that’s what you need in the Premier League.”
Ajer signed for Celtic from Start in 2016 for a fee of around £540,000.
He has amassed 14 senior caps for his country already, making his debut in March 2018.
In other West Brom news, Kaveh Solhekol has said how many new signings Bilic wants to make before the season kicks off next month.
