‘Finally’ – Many West Brom fans react to official announcement on Albion ‘GOAT’

West Brom fans have taken to Twitter to express their delight at Dara O’Shea being handed a place in the Republic of Ireland’s senior squad.

The announcement was made on Sunday, and the Baggies defender could now make his debut for Stephen Kenny’s men against Bulgaria this week.

For many fans, the news is long, long overdue.

The 21-year-old made 17 Championship appearances last term, predominantly operating as a right-back and scoring three goals in the process.

Albion supporters affectionately refer to him as the Irish Cafu, and it’s not hard to see why either.

Compared to fellow Albion full-back Kieran Gibbs, O’Shea has a higher dribble success rate, higher crossing accuracy, and higher shooting accuracy last season, as per Wyscout.

Initially, he was called up to the Republic’s U21s setup, but his form has been so good that it always felt like a matter of time before he was handed his chance with the main squad.

Admittedly, that opportunity has maybe come a little bit quicker than initially expected, but if O’Shea can build on the impressive form that he has shown for West Brom over the past 12 months, then he should have more than enough quality to cut it at that level.

Here’s hoping he can make a positive impression and do us all proud.
