West Brom aren’t averse to using the loan market to bolster their squad.
We saw the Baggies delivered into part of the transfer window to great aplomb last term, bringing in the likes of Grady Diangana, Filip Krovinovic, Callum Robinson, and Matheus Pereira all greatly improving their promotion hopes.
And a recent report from The Sun gave the impression that they were about to try and repeat that trick with a move for Chelsea youngster Conor Gallagher.
The 20-year-old impressed during loan spells with Charlton Athletic and Swansea City last season, and looks set to secure a move to the top flight ahead of next season.
The Sun suggested that the Baggies were leading the race to sign the midfielder, but a fresh report from Football.London suggests that Gallagher is in fact on the cusp of joining Crystal Palace.
A piece from Chelsea correspondent Oliver Harbord suggests that the starlet underwent a medical at Selhurst Park yesterday.
And if that is true, then it’s a major blow for Albion.
Gallagher is a real talent, and many fans were delighted at the prospect of him arriving at The Hawthorns.
It’s easy to see why too – last season, he averaged a dribble success rate that was 7.1% higher than Baggies loanee Filip Krovinovic’s, as well as a shot accuracy rate that was superior by 9.4%, as per Wyscout.
With that in mind, missing out on him would have been a blow at the best of times.
But missing out on him to a side who are likely to be there or thereabouts in terms of where the Baggies will be aspiring to finish next season is a real disappointment.
