West Brom put negotiations on ice for £65k-wk forward – report
West Brom have halted negotiations with Watford over the signing of Troy Deeney, according to Steve Madeley.
It was reported that the Championship side had offered their forward to the Baggies for next season on loan for the Premier League.
Deeney was set for a meeting with the London club to determine the outcome of his future this week, although what happened is unknown.
The Athletic journalist, Madeley, reported late on Friday that the 32-year-old is no longer a primary target at the Hawthorns.
“Taking Troy Deeney on loan from Watford following their relegation out of the top flight has been discussed but the 32-year-old is not currently a primary target and negotiations over him have been put on ice,” he wrote.
Deeney had been offered to the Baggies, so all they will have had to do was agree personal terms, but we believe that Slaven Bilic has made the right decision here.
At 32-years-old, the forward would just be adding to Charlie Austin and Hal Robson-Kanu in the final third – with the Baggies needing someone more mobile.
Deeney only scored 10 goals in the Premier League last season, and the Baggies need a forward who can get closer to 15 with a lack of goals currently elsewhere in the team.
His £65,000-a-week wages [Spotrac] will also have been a major problem for the West Brom board, so it suits all parties that they will start to look elsewhere.
Karlan Grant of Huddersfield appears to be the one they want, and after having one bid rejected, it will be interesting to see the next move.
