Athletic journalist shares major update on West Brom chances of signing Karlan Grant

The Athletic journalist Steve Madeley has detailed how West Brom may have to stage a deal to sign Huddersfield Town forward Karlan Grant.

After the Baggies broke their club-record fee to bring Grady Diangana back to the Hawthorns, it is unlikely that the deal for Grant would be straight cash.

West Brom were close to an agreement for the forward before signing Diangana, and Huddersfield are standing firm on their £16million asking price.

Madeley reported on the potential deal on Monday and claimed that Luke Dowling and his staff may need to get creative to get this one over the line.

The three things suggested as possibilities are a series of staggered payments, a loan with future obligations and a “hefty” sell-on fee.

Now, obviously that isn’t straight forward but it doesn’t mean that fans should be worried that it will end in disappointment.

Madeley went on to admit that it is “inconceivable” that Slaven Bilic finishes the window without a new striker available to him.

This isn’t the worst news, with the transfer window open for another month still with the Premier League starting this weekend.

On the other hand, it could mean that Bilic will have to start his first handful of games with either Hal Robson-Kanu or Charlie Austin – something which wouldn’t go down well.

Austin was singled out for his poor lethargic performance in the 0-0 draw with Brighton on Saturday, and Robson-Kanu has been away from the squad with Wales this week.

Grant would bring an unbelievable amount of energy compared to those two, as well as 19 goals last season – only one less than the Baggies duo combined.

It may seem a struggle right now, but no one expected the deal for Diangana to go through, it did – fingers crossed for Grant next.
