View: West Brom surely have advantage over Leeds in pursuit of this PL midfielder
West Brom are slowly putting together their squad for the Premier League season, with kick-off against Leicester only days away.
Slaven Bilic has completed his goalkeeping and defensive ranks at the Hawthorns, with Cedric Kipre and David Button arriving.
The Croatian is closing in on Callum Robinson, but it is no secret that he would like another midfielder and striker before October’s deadline.
That midfielder could be Chelsea’s, Conor Gallagher.
The Daily Mail reported on Tuesday that Crystal Palace have dropped their interest after winning the race leaving the door open for a move for the Albion.
West Brom and Leeds are credited to be set to intensify their interest in the 20-year-old playmaker, with Luke Dowling and his staff making the first move.
Jacob Steinberg of the Guardian shared on his personal Twitter account that the Baggies had opened talks with Chelsea and Gallagher over a season-long switch.
West Brom have the advantage?
The Baggies opening talks first to bring Gallagher to the Hawthorns certainly gives them the advantage, but there are other reasons too.
Looking at their strength in depth, Bilic doesn’t have many options behind Jake Livermore and Romaine Sawyers with Rekeem Harper and Sam Field the only two options in rotation.
There have been constant reports linking Field, in particular, with an exit this summer and that would instantly see Gallagher rise the pecking order in the midlands.
Compare that to Leeds and they are congested. They have Mateusz Klich, Adam Forshaw, Pablo Hernandez, Tyler Roberts and Rodrigo who can all play in that playmaker role and there are zero chances of any of those leaving.
Frank Lampard will be weighing up his options, and surely he would prefer to see one of his young talents go somewhere that can offer him more chances of guaranteed minutes next season.
