West Brom youngster opens up on difficulty leaving Hawthorns this summer
West Brom youngster Josh Griffiths has opened up on the difficulties of leaving the Hawthorns this summer.
The promising keeper has made the switch to Cheltenham Town on loan for the season, following academy teammate Finn Azaz.
His first game was superb as he earned the man-of-the-match award in the 1-0 win over Peterborough in the Carabao Cup on Saturday.
Griffiths opened up on temporarily leaving the Albion, but he admitted that it was something that definitely needed to happen.
“I’ve got friends at West Brom who I’ve known from a young age so it’s hard not going in every day and having a laugh and joke with them,” he told the official club website.
“But, in a sort of selfish and career-driven way, you’ve got to step out of your comfort zone and try new things so it was never in doubt.”
Looking at the options back at the Hawthorns, Griffiths certainly had no choice but to leave the club on loan this season to prove himself.
With David Button arriving, he joins Sam Johnstone and Jonathan Bond as three senior options. Add to that Alex Palmer and Griffiths is currently fifth on the list.
If Griffiths continues in the same form as he showed on Saturday, it will be no time before we seeing him competing for the number one spot.
The 19-year-old made seven saves in the Carabao Cup win, as well as one successful punch on the way to the impressive victory, and that must continue.
