Confirmed: West Brom player pens new contract for 20/21

Lee Peltier has signed a new contract with West Brom that will keep him at the club for the 2020/21 campaign.

The Baggies confirmed the news via their official website on Friday morning.

Peltier joined Albion in the January transfer window, but is still yet to make an appearance for the club.

Despite his lack of involvement, however, the 33-year-old has been rewarded with a new deal at The Hawthorns, much to his delight.

Speaking to the club’s official website, he said: “When the gaffer told me that he wanted me to stay for another year I was buzzing.

“I haven’t had the chance to start yet but I accept that was difficult because of the way last season finished with the lockdown and then the restart.

“But I train really hard and give everything I can to the cause and he knows he can rely on that. I like to think that the gaffer recognises that and believes I still have a role to play.

“I’m delighted to sign up for another year.”

This is certainly a bit of an odd one.

Peltier has made no impact whatsoever at The Hawthorns, and to be handed a new contract at a time when funds are reportedly a little tight feels like a bit of a puzzler.

The other big concern here would be that Peltier is being handed a new deal instead of Albion wrapping up a deal for Branislav Ivanovic.

According to John Percy, discussions around a potential deal are still progressing at a rate of knots, and an agreement could be imminent, but the fear will be that Peltier’s announcement could fill up Slaven Bilic’s quota of 30-something defenders to pad out his squad with.

Here’s hoping it doesn’t.
