West Brom manager Slaven Bilic has confirmed that Ahmed Hegazi missed Albion’s win against Harrogate Town with a hamstring injury.
Hegazi, 29, missed out on Bilic’s starting line-up for the Premier League opener against Leicester on Sunday but managed to injure himself in training 24 hours later.
It sounds as though the Egypt international was planned to start versus the League Two side, who the Baggies beat 3-0 anyway at The Hawthorns on Wednesday night.
“Hegazi was on the bench on Sunday,” Bilic said after the Carabao Cup win, as quoted by the Birmingham Mail. “He came in on Monday, the guys who didn’t play against Leicester had training. He did his hamstring in training, that’s the reason why he wasn’t involved [against Harrogate].
“Hamstrings…Monday or even yesterday they didn’t know how big it is. It shouldn’t be big, he didn’t do it in a sprint or anything like that. Hopefully it’s a smaller one.
“That’s the reason why Ahmed wasn’t on the pitch tonight, basically.”
Bilic started three centre-backs against Leicester on Sunday and, tellingly, Hegazi wasn’t one of them.
The former Al Ahly defender struggled to hold down a regular spot in Bilic’s starting line-up in the Championship last season as he faced competition with Kyle Bartley to start alongside Semi Ajayi.
But since the end of last season, the Baggies have brought in Cedric Kipre and Branislav Ivanovic while young Dara O’Shea is also making a massive impression.
Hegazi’s hamstring injury came at the wrong time because he would have been likely to start against Harrogate ahead of O’Shea and offer Bilic a reminder of his abilities in the defence.
But for every good game Hegazi has had for the Baggies, it seems like he has two or three bad ones and it remains to be seen how the inconsistent Egyptian’s season will pan out.
In other West Brom news, Derby have revived their long-term interest in this Albion player.
