West Brom set to announce new signing after major development yesterday – reliable journalist
West Brom are set to announce the signing of midfielder Conor Gallagher on loan from Chelsea, according to Football.London journalist Oliver Harbord.
Writing via his personal Twitter account, the Chelsea correspondent reported that Gallagher, 20, signed a new contract at Stamford Bridge yesterday (Wednesday).
It is understood that although Aston Villa showed last interest in signing Gallagher, West Brom have won the race to secure the England Under-21 international on a season-long loan.
Finally, Slaven Bilic is set to strengthen his central midfield options.
Gallagher is a versatile central midfielder who can play in deep or attacking roles in the centre of the pitch and should be a great asset to the Baggies over the course of the campaign.
On Sunday, it became clear that West Brom were lacking options in the midfield as Romaine Sawyers and Jake Livermore struggled to cope with Leicester both when they had the ball and when they didn’t.
Away from those two, Rekeem Harper and Sam Field are the only other central midfield options for Bilic.
Harper scored a stunner against Harrogate on Wednesday night while Field also made his first competitive appearance for the Baggies since his season-long loan at Charlton last term.
He played alongside Gallagher at The Valley in the first half of the season before the Chelsea youngster was loaned to Swansea.
If he can perform as well as he did in the Championship in the Premier League, we will have secured ourselves a very good player up until next year.
In other West Brom news, Derby have revived their long-term interest in this Albion player.
