‘Assistant has spotted it’ – Dermot Gallagher shares verdict on WBA incident v Everton

Dermot Gallagher has claimed that West Brom defender Kieran Gibbs deserved his red card in the 5-2 defeat against Everton on Saturday.

The experienced full-back was given his marching orders at Goodison Park after raising his hand in the face of James Rodriguez.

Slaven Bilic didn’t disagree with the decision but was also shown a red card after questioning Mike Dean on the pitch at half-time.

Gallagher claimed that it was the assistant referee who spotted the incident and ultimately made the decision over Gibbs’ fate.

“Darren Cann the assistant has spotted it and advised Mike Dean and it’s a red card,” he said on Sky Sports.

“You just cannot do that. Cann kept his eye on it, saw it, identified it, relayed it to Dean and the red card was issued.”

Gallagher usually agrees with every decision that his fellow officials make, but there aren’t many complaints with this one.

Gibbs is experienced enough to know that you can’t react when players do something wrong, and that is exactly what he did.

The 30-year-old sent a message to the Baggies fans after the defeat in Merseyside, saying that he takes full responsibility for the second defeat in as many weeks.

Conor Townsend will now get the perfect opportunity in the next month, with three guaranteed starts in the Premier League ahead of him.

There aren’t any easy games in the top flight either, with those clashes against Chelsea, Southampton and Burnley, he must be ready.
