‘We need to learn fast’ – Livermore makes West Brom admission after defeat v Everton

West Brom captain Jake Livermore has said that he doesn’t want this season to be defined by the mistakes his side have made in their opening Premier League games.

The Baggies have lost both of their Premier League games this season, against Leicester and Everton, conceding eight goals and scoring two.

And while West Brom haven’t been awful, individual mistakes have let the side down, most notably Kieran Gibbs’s needless sending off in the first half against Everton.

Livermore, speaking to the Express and Star, said that his side need to avoid being on the wrong end of ‘pivotal moments’, and while praising the Baggies’ recent performances, he admitted that West Brom ‘need to learn fast.’

“We don’t want that to be the story of our season.

“We’ve started well in both games and unfortunately pivotal moments, whether that be goals, decisions or sending offs, we seem to be getting on the wrong end of them and we can’t let that creep into our season.

“We need to learn fast and nullify those mistakes. We need to learn quickly. The boys have shown some good quality and some good stuff. It’s a case of stretching that out over 90 minutes.

“Some decisions we’ve been on the wrong side of, but that’s football. We need to put ourselves in a position where those decisions don’t make so much of a difference to the result.”

West Brom started well in their opening match against Leicester and were still in the game after conceding first, but a careless foul by Kyle Bartley gave the Foxes a penalty and effectively ended any hope that the Baggies would get something out of the game.

Slaven Bilic’s side also started well at Goodison Park, taking the lead through Grady Diangana, before conceding twice and having both Gibbs and Bilic sent off before the start of the second half.

These individual errors need to be rectified if West Brom are to stand any chance of staying in the Premier League.

There are positives to take from West Brom’s start to the season, mainly the performance of their attackers in the Everton game. The Toffees’ defence could not handle Diangana or Pereira, and they showed why Bilic was so keen to bring them both back to the Hawthorns.

If the Baggies can fix these mistakes, they will soon start to pick up points and climb the table, but they face a hard task to get points in their next game as they take on Chelsea at home.
