Report: Path cleared for West Brom move as Bilic hunts £80k/wk club top-scorer
Andre Ayew has been linked with a move to West Brom in a transfer that would see him link up with former manager Slaven Bilic.
Bilic signed Ayew, 30, while he was at West Ham in 2016, and is reportedly keen to bring the Ghanaian forward to The Hawthorns in a move that would bolster the Baggies attacking options.
Ghanasoccernet are reporting that a Premier League return for Ayew is ‘on the cards’, with Swansea ‘open to the idea’ of loaning him to a Premier league side to reduce their wage bill.’ It’s been reported that his current salary is as much as £80k-a-week.
It’s said that Swansea wouldn’t stand in his way if he wanted the move.
Ayew notched 16 goals and eight assists for Swansea in the Championship last season and was their top-scorer, with his last goal coming in the Swans’ play off semi-final loss to Brentford.
He can play as a winger on both sides, as well as an out-and-out striker, which would give Bilic’s side some variation in attack. He played primarily on the right wing for the Swans last season, as Wyscout’s map of Ayew’s average position last term shows.
But with Bilic still looking for a striker, with Huddersfield’s Karlan Grant heavily linked with a move to the Hawthorns this summer, it could mean he wants Ayew to lead his attack.
The Ghanaian forward would be an upgrade on Slaven Bilic’s current striking options, with Callum Robinson and Hal Robson-Kanu failing to impose themselves in West Brom’s opening Premier League games.
In the Premier League, Ayew has managed 21 goals in 89 games, at both Swansea and West Ham, and would be backed to add to that total with the talent of Grady Diangana and Matheus Pereira either side of him.
As the closure of the transfer window rapidly approaches, West Brom could do a lot worse than signing an versatile attacker with Premier League experience who still has a lot to offer, even if it is only a loan deal.
