Callum Robinson is now being treated as a striker at West Brom, according to Baggies Boss Slaven Bilic.
Robinson was deployed mainly as a left winger last season, but he started up front in the Baggies’ win over QPR on the last day of last season. Robinson scored in that game as West Brom secured automatic promotion to the Premier League.
But Bilic has now declared that he is considering the 25-year-old “a striker who can play on the wing”, saying Robinson’s final day performance last season was “electric”.
Speaking to the Express and Star Bilic said, “For the QPR game, he gave us something we don’t normally have in that position, he was running in behind, he was electric. Their defence was never comfortable with him.
“Up front we have quality players but they are all different types of player. In that position, he gives us energy, that is why he played that position. He gave us energy.
“Yes, he can cover both positions – on the wings and up front and we are going to mix him in those positions. But now I treat him as a striker who can play on the wing. I’m not treating him as a winger who can play as a striker.”
The English attacker signed for West Brom permanently this summer, in a swap deal with Sheffield United which saw Oliver Burke go the other way.
Robinson has started both of West Brom’s Premier League games this season but has struggled to assert himself against the defences of Leicester and Everton.
This positional map, from Wyscout, shows the average position of Robinson last season, and it is clear to see that he has limited experience up front, despite his impressive performance against QPR.
This news could potentially be a sign that West Brom’s search for a new striker is stalling, and could hint that Slaven Bilic is preparing for life in the Premier League without the out-and-out striker he wants.
The Baggies have been linked with a number of strikers recently but there has been no concrete developments for any of these rumoured targets.
