‘Man mountain’, ‘Ballon d’Or’: Many West Brom fans lavish praise on ‘fantastic’ player v Chelsea

West Brom fans have taken to Twitter to lavish praise on Kyle Bartley for his display in the 3-3 draw against Chelsea on Saturday evening.

The centre-back struck an unlikely goal to put his side 3-0 at half time against the Blues, before seeing Albion pegged cruelly in the dying moments of the game, with the game eventually ending 3-3.

But many Baggies still saw fit to hail the defender for his impressive display.

And this was about so much more than just his goal.

Despite shipping three goals in the second half, there were long spells of the match where West Brom defended very well in Slaven Bilic’s newly-preferred five-man backline.

Bartley hasn’t always shone in that formation – last week’s 5-2 defeat to Everton comes to mind – but he did well here, by and large.

The 29-year-old made 11 clearances against Frank Lampard’s men, more than in his last two outings combined [Whoscored], as well registering his highest match rating of the season to date – 7.12.

That’s admirable considering his had previously failed to get above 5.8 so far this term.

Of course, there are still major creases to be ironed out for Albion, and this draw will have definitely felt more like a loss for the vast majority of supporters after squandering such a huge lead, but there were still a lot of positives to be taken from the match.

Bartley’s resurgent form was certainly one of them.
