‘In talks’ – Sky Sports journalist delivers key West Brom transfer update

Sky Sports transfer reporter Mark McAdam has said that Derby County are ‘in talks’ with West Brom over a move for striker Charlie Austin.

McAdam posted on his personal Twitter account that the two clubs are in talks over a move for the ex-Southampton striker, who is in the final year of his Baggies contract.

A report claimed that Austin is one of three players who will be allowed to leave the Hawthorns in the near future, and it seems as though a move back to the Championship could be on for the 31-year-old.

Austin had a decent season for the Baggies in 2019/20, scoring 10 goals in 34 Championship appearances to help fire West Brom back to the Premier League.

But Slaven Bilic clearly doesn’t feel that Austin can cut it in the Premier League anymore. The striker has scored 34 goals in 106 top-flight outings, in spells with QPR and Southampton.

While at QPR, Austin won the Premier League player of the month accolade. In December 2014 he scored five goals in five games, including a hattrick against his current club.

Of course, this was almost six years ago and Austin isn’t the same player he was back in 2014, which is why Bilic has taken the decision to part with the English forward.

Austin has made two appearances for the Baggies this season, both in the Carabao Cup. He played 72 minutes in the 3-0 win against Harrogate Town, and came off the bench late on against Brentford before scoring in the penalty shoot-out that the Baggies eventually lost 5-4.
