‘Garbage’, ‘Absolute joke’, ‘Woeful’ – Many West Brom fans blast 28y/o display v Southampton

West Brom fans have blasted Romaine Sawyers for his performance in the 2-0 defeat to Southampton at St Mary’s on Sunday afternoon.

Sawyers, 28, has been regularly criticised by Albion fans throughout not only the start of the new Premier League season but also the back-half of last term while the club was still in the Championship.

Although the former Brentford playmaker usually tops the passing statistics among West Brom players, the quality of his passing and annoying ability to lose possession in defensive areas of the pitch have left Baggies fans fuming on Twitter.

Stats by WhoScored show that Sawyers completed 92 per cent of the passes he attempted before he was substituted off and replaced by Filip Krovinovic in the 64th minute.

However, he was also dribbled past twice, failed to complete any of the two tackles he attempted and was dispossessed once.

Sawyers just doesn’t seem to be working as a deep-lying midfielder in the Premier League due to his defensive flaws and that has seen West Brom found out time and time again by opposition attacks.

Supporters were less than pleased with his display at St Mary’s, with one saying he was “causing more problems than he’s solving”.

West Brom looked a lot better when Sam Field joined the midfield but relying on a player who spend last season on loan at Charlton in the Championship is a damning reminder of how poor the club has done in the transfer window since the end of last season.

Bilic still needs additions to his squad in almost every single position.
