Report – West Brom plot £6 million raid for 13-cap England international
West Brom are interested in signing Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend, according to The Sun.
The Baggies are understood to be keen on the 13-cap England international, but the Eagles may be unwilling to part with the player unless they are able to bring in a suitable replacement.
Brentford’s Said Benrahma has been touted as a potential addition in the closing stages of the transfer window.
It is understood that Albion would be willing to pay around £6 million for the player.
But the report also suggests that the Baggies could struggle to raise the funds to get a deal over the line for the 29-year-old.
Any potential agreement could be made more difficult by the fact that Townsend has started the season in good form for Roy Hodgson’s men.
We’re really not too sure about this one.
First of all, do West Brom really need another winger?
The priority in these closing stages of the transfer window has to be a centre-forward, and Townsend simply isn’t accustomed to operating in a central role.
The £6 million or so that it would reportedly cost to bring him in would be a substantial chunk of the £18 million that is being touted for Karlan Grant, and when we already Graduate Diangana and Matheus Pereira on the books, it feels like more of a luxury than a necessity.
Factor in how keen Palace seem to be to keep hold of the player, and we would be inclined to suggest that this is report with very little chance of coming to fruition.
