Reliable journalist: West Brom to miss out on striker after £18m Baggies deal reportedly agreed

West Brom are set to miss out on signing Metz centre-forward Habib Diallo, according to Robin Bairner.

The French specialist, who writes for Goal, claimed that Diallo was joining Ligue 1 rivals Strasbourg instead.

Bairner tweeted, “Habib Diallo, followed by Spurs, WBA and Sheffield United this summer, finally set to leave Metz for Ligue 1 rivals Strasbourg.”

Bairner posted the update on Monday morning, after French journalist Joris Crolbois claimed that West Brom had agreed a loan-to-buy deal for Diallo on Sunday.

Striker needed desperately

It’s no secret that West Brom are in urgent need of a striker but there was evidence in abundance on Sunday.

They only had two shots on target in the 2-0 loss to Southampton and never really looked like scoring.

This is a blow. It looked like Diallo was close to signing for West Brom but this news seemingly scuppers any hope of a deal.

Diallo didn’t play on Sunday and that hinted at an imminent move. However, it looks now like he’s staying in France and that leaves the Baggies no closer to solving their big transfer problem.

Just one point from their first four games shows that a big signing is needed, although incredibly that doesn’t even see them in the relegation zone.

Fulham, Sheffield United and Burnley have all blanked in their first Premier League games.

It’s also worth remembering that the deadline today is for international transfers. West Brom could still sign a striker from an EFL club until October 16.

In other news, Dharmesh Sheth has shared a major double striker transfer update on the Baggies.
