‘100%’, ‘Stupid not to’ – Some West Brom fans urge club to sign forward released on Tuesday

A section of West Brom fans are urging the club to sign striker Danny Welbeck on a free transfer after he was released by Watford on Tuesday

In a statement, Watford confirmed the England International’s contract was terminated. Welbeck arrived at Vicarage Road on a free transfer in August 2019 and scored three goals in 20 Premier League appearances last season.

On social media, Baggies fans have been sharing their thoughts on whether it would be worth taking a punt on Welbeck, with West Brom in desperate need of a striker.

West Brom are facing a striker crisis, following a potentially long term injury to Hal Robson-Kanu, Callum Robinson is the only fit striker at the club who is in contention to play. Charlie Austin and Kenneth Zohore are still at the club but look likely to move on, and should those moves transpire, Robinson would be the only fit first-team striker at the club.

The Baggies didn’t bring a striker in during the summer transfer window but still have the chance to sign players from the EFL until October 16. This leaves open the possibility for top target Karlan Grant to come to the Hawthorns from Huddersfield, but there is no guarantee that deal will get done.

A deal for ex-Arsenal forward Welbeck could make sense from a purely financial point of view because he does have bags of Premier League experience and will command no transfer fee, but it is unlikely he has the quality required to make Slaven Bilic see him as a genuine option.

Also at 29-years-old, he won’t be part of the long term plan at West Brom. He was also earning a reported £100,000-a-week at Watford, which is probably more than the Baggies can spare on a player like Welbeck.

It will be interesting to see if anything happens between Welbeck and West Brom over the coming days and weeks.
