West Brom player responds after COVID-19 outbreak during international break
West Brom defender Dara O’Shea has shared his fears over the future of international football during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Baggies youngster earned a call up to the senior squad this week after the Republic of Ireland suffered an outbreak after their trip to Slovakia.
Callum Robinson suffered as a result of that and was stood down from the 0-0 draw against Wales on Sunday.
O’Shea claimed that players are still eager to represent their country, and hope that clubs don’t get too involved in the future.
“Obviously us as footballers, we want to go away with our international teams and we want to play, so if clubs did look at it that way it wouldn’t be ideal, but then again it’s the times we live in,” he told the Independent.
“I don’t think anyone knows for certain what’s going to happen so we’ve just got to respect it and move on.”
It doesn’t make much sense for international sides to be playing pointless friendlies during this pandemic, as it just adds more travelling and unnecessary mixing of players.
If Robinson is forced to isolate after being stood down, he would miss the upcoming Premier League game against Burnley.
O’Shea seems to believe that players still want to represent their countries during this time, but if more unnecessary outbreaks of COVID-19 are found, surely that would be reconsidered.
