We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…
Kevin Phillips has admitted it will be “interesting” to see the return of Burnley forward Jay Rodriguez to the Hawthorns on Monday.
Rodriguez spent two seasons at West Brom after signing from Southampton back in 2017, before sealing his return to his boyhood club in 2019.
The 31-year-old was a doubt for the Premier League clash, but Sean Dyche shared he should return after missing three games through injury.
Phillips claims it depends on the individual, but he has experienced players who want to “fire that nail into the coffin” of their past experiences.
“It just depends on the way you left the football club, how you feel about it,” Phillips told West Brom News.
“I never particularly enjoyed playing against my ex clubs, so I never really wanted to prove anything or try and hurt them. For me, I’ve just seen it as another football match.
“Some players get really wound up about it and really want to prove, it just depends on what’s happened at the club and there’s a variation of different things.
“Ultimately they’ll always be a part of you that wherever you come, whether it’s coming back to your old club or you’re playing them at your home ground, you’ll always want to try and do well.
“Whether you really want to fire that nail into the coffin, it’s all down to the individual. It’ll be interesting to see how he performs against them.”
Rodriguez made 90 appearances for the Baggies during his time with the club, scoring 33 goals and delivering eight assists.
The 31-year-old left on good terms after failing to earn promotion back to the Premier League the season before last.
There isn’t any bad blood between the two parties, but that doesn’t mean that Rodriguez won’t be out to find the back of the net and the Baggies defence must be aware of his severe threat in the final third.
