Exclusive: Pundit surprised by West Brom transfer news with out-of-window exit on the cards

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…

Kevin Phillips admits that he’s “surprised” by Slaven Bilic’s decision to leave Kamil Grosicki out of his Premier League squad.

Grosicki, 32, almost joined Nottingham Forest on deadline day for the domestic transfer window but it has since been widely reported that the paperwork was submitted late.

According to The Athletic journalist Steve Madeley, forms were sent in 21 seconds after the 5pm deadline but lawyers are trying to convince the EFL to green-light the Poland international’s transfer to the City Ground after finding a potential loophole.

While we’re still waiting to hear whether that deal will go through, Phillips is still unsure about Bilic’s decision to omit Grosicki from his squad.

“I’m a little bit surprised but who knows what’s going on day-to-day at the training ground? The manager works with him so you can’t criticise but all I can say is that I’m surprised,” Phillips told West Brom News.

“He’s only been at the club for a short period of time but perhaps he hasn’t turned out to be the player that Bilic wanted and he might still move on to free up a bit of cash.

“We will have to wait and see how it pans out [with Nottingham Forest]. Chris Hughton’s a good manager, he’ll get them going.”

Grosicki has not played for West Brom in the Premier League since they won promotion from the Championship and he barely started for the Baggies last term in the second-tier.

However, the ex-Hull man did have a big impact in some of his appearances, especially after the coronavirus-enforced break in the campaign.

Grosicki’s shown better form than the likes of Matt Phillips and Kyle Edwards this year so it’s a shame that he’s likely to be on his way.
