John Percy delivers major West Brom news as star player set for lucrative new deal

West Brom attacker Matheus Pereira is set to sign a new contract with the club, just two months after sealing his permanent transfer.

As reported by John Percy in The Telegraph, the terms will make him one of the highest earners at the club and add an additional year to his existing four-year deal.

Pereira starred for the Baggies last season, scoring eight goals and 16 assists and has already made an impact in the Premier League, with one goal and an assist to start the new campaign (via WhoScored).

Former Queens Park Rangers and West Ham United midfielder Trevor Sinclair is a fan of Pereira and said that the deal made sense.

Capped 12 times by England, Sinclair told talkSPORT after news of the deal broke (11:39am): “He is excellent, has a low centre of gravity, a really skilful player. I like him in that West Brom side.”

Unusual timing

Given that Pereira signed for the Baggies in a deal worth £8.25 million during the summer, the fact that he has already agreed a new contract is a surprise – but not at the same time.

It could be there was a clause in there that West Brom wanted out and Pereira has already proved he’s one of the biggest bargains of the summer.

It will also come as a relief to some fans with money a worry at the club. It seems it’s there for the important players.

Pereira is a crucial part of this squad and the club may have seen this as a necessary action in order to secure his long-term future.

If he continues to deliver and fully translates his Championship form to the top-flight, this can be seen as a good piece of business, but the onus is now on Pereira to find his very best form.
