View: Alarming stats shows West Brom in league of their own for all the wrong reasons

An alarming statistic has shed light on how West Brom are performing this season compared to their Premier League rivals.

The Expected Goals Philosophy tweeted a chart that shows every Premier League’s expected points so far this season.

The expected points stat measures the number of points each team would have expected to earn from each game based on the number of goalscoring chances that the side created and conceded in their games.

The chart shows that Albion should have picked up three points this season, which they have done. This suggests that the Baggies are doing about as well as expected and aren’t performing above or below expectations.

At first glance, this may not seem so bad as it proves that Albion aren’t under-performing despite their poor start to the season.

But if you think about it, that means that without under-performing Albion are in the relegation zone, meaning that Slaven Bilic’s side will have to over-perform if they are to beat the drop.

West Brom

It is obvious to anyone who had watched the Baggies this season that it will take a lot of effort from Slaven Bilic and his players if they are to over-perform, while others may be thinking how Albion could get any worse.

The chart also shows how far behind the rest of the league Albion are. The two teams below the Baggies in the table, Burnley and Sheffield United, sit comfortably above the West Midlands club in this chart with an expected points total of seven.

This suggests that sooner rather than later the Clarets and the Blades will start to pick up points and overtake Albion in the table. This chart is yet another sign that West Brom need to drastically improve if they are to avoid the drop this season if it wasn’t already blindingly obvious from the performances.

In other West Brom news, here are three things we think Bilic could do to get more from his squad.
