View: 20y/o can’t repeat poor international performance for West Brom

West Brom defender Dara O’Shea disappointed for his country in their 3-0 loss to England this week.

The 20-year-old played 81 minutes in the Republic of Ireland defence but he was powerless to keep a quality England side at bay.

Harry Maguire, Jadon Sancho and Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored for the hosts as O’Shea turned in a below-par performance that will worry Baggies fans.

O’Shea has been in decent form for the Baggies of late and impressed on his senior Ireland debut earlier this year.

But the stats from Thursday’s game show that O’Shea didn’t perform to his usual standards.

According to Wyscout, O’Shea only won 25% of his defensive duels which simply isn’t good enough for a defender, even against the quality of England.

The 20-year-old also won none of his aerial duels and failed to complete a successful slide tackle. This resulted in O’Shea giving away two fouls which is higher than his season average of conceding 0.94 fouls per game.

One of the fouls O’Shea gave away highlighted the young defender’s lack of experience. Below you can see how O’Shea has the ball under pressure but he gives it away needlessly and proceeds to bring down Calvert-Lewin.

He was lucky to escape a yellow card for the challenge and he can’t afford to make similar mistakes for Albion in the Premier League.

On a positive note, O’Shea’s passing was better than usual with him registering a passing accuracy of 82% which is more than his average of 76%.

His long was marginally better than usual as his accuracy was 50% which is up on his average of 49.8%.

O’Shea’s performance will come as a worry to Baggies fan who will be hoping their side’s defence is in top form when they visit Old Trafford after the international break.

The Baggies defender will have to be in top form to keep a talented United side at bay. Let’s hope he has learned from his poor outing against England and he can help Albion to a positive result against the Red Devils.
