Conor Gallagher was outstanding once again for West Brom against Manchester United but he couldn’t help his side pick up a first league win of the season.
Albion lost 1-0 in controversial circumstances after Gallagher thought he’d won a penalty for the Baggies only for referee David Coote to overturn his own decision.
United went on to score their own penalty at the second attempt after Sam Johnstone saved Bruno Fernandes’ first effort.
VAR showed that Johnstone came off his line and the penalty was retaken and at the second time of asking Fernandes converted.
It was a disappointing night in Manchester for West Brom but Gallagher was brilliant in the centre of midfield and the stats show just how good he was.
According to Wyscout, Gallagher registered a 90% pass completion rate with 100% of his long passes finding their target. He rarely gave the ball away and the United players struggled to cut out the Chelsea loanee’s excellent passes.
100% of Gallagher’s passes into the penalty are also found their target as he proved to be effective further up the pitch compared to how much he has sat back in recent games.
The heatmap below shows how much ground the 20-year-old covered at Old Trafford and it puts into perspective how much of an engine Gallagher possesses.
You can see that Gallagher did roughly the same amount of attacking and defending which is remarkable considering he was part of a West Brom side playing Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Gallagher won 100% of his loose ball duels against the Red Devils while winning 60% of his total duels. This is an improvement in the 56.2% of total duels Gallagher has been winning on average per game this season.
He also made three interceptions and completed a successful dribble as the Chelsea loanee turned in a brilliant all-round performance despite his side’s disappointing defeat.
Gallagher even ‘won’ Albion’s ‘penalty’ which showed he has the ability to find himself some space in a good position in the opposition box.
The Baggies were robbed on Saturday night but there were plenty of positives to take from the game, one of which is Gallagher’s fantastic performance.
In other West Brom news, Slaven Bilic has confirmed that two Albion players have tested positive for COVID-19.
