‘Are you joking?’, Lai out – Many West Brom fans baffled as journo shares Hawthorns update

West Brom fans have been reacting on Twitter after it was reported that the club has removed the statue of Tony Brown from outside of The Hawthorns.

According to Adrian Goldberg and former Birmingham Mail journalist Chris Lepkowski, the statue of the Baggies legend has “mysteriously disappeared”.

West Brom have not released any kind of statement to confirm it has happened or – more importantly – why it has happened and that has led to confusion and a bit of anger from some Baggies supporters on Twitter.

It’s very likely that the statue has only been taken down temporarily for maintenance work but it’s a fairly new statue with West Brom unveiling the tribute to their all-time appearance and goalscoring record holder Brown just over six years ago.

But, still, that doesn’t excuse the club for keeping fans in the dark about a statue of one of West Brom’s greatest players being removed.

And that is perhaps were some of the anger and confusion comes from, with one supporter calling the situation “strange” and another one asking whether Goldberg was joking.

Here is a selection of their tweets:

It’s funny how these blips in communication have come ever since Mark Jenkins stepped down as chief executive and was replaced by Guochuan Lai’s man-in-the-Midlands Xu “Ken” Xe.

It’s as though ever since fans stopped going to matches, the club have felt they don’t really need to keep supporters up to date with matters taking place at The Hawthorns.

You can guarantee that if fans were allowed to watch the Baggies play Sheffield United at The Hawthorns on Saturday, the club would have released a statement to explain why the Brown statue won’t be there.
