‘What on earth’ – Tim Sherwood savages West Brom ace for role in controversial incident

Tim Sherwood has savaged West Brom keeper Sam Johnstone for stepping off the line while saving Bruno Fernandes’ first penalty.

Manchester United were ordered to re-take the penalty, and the Portuguese international smashed it home to earn his side a 1-0 win at Old Trafford.

Sherwood claimed that Johnstone knew that would happen, and questioned his decision making in the disappointing defeat.

Speaking on Gillette Soccer Saturday (28/11, 12: 57 pm), Sherwood couldn’t believe that Johnstone even gave the officials the chance to overturn the decision.

“I can’t understand it,” he said.

“Why on earth is the goalkeeper moving off the line? It doesn’t matter if he even saves it, he knows it’s going to get retaken.

“I can’t understand why the goalkeeper moves in the first place.”

Sherwood is citing the rules, so we can’t disagree massively.

But, we can question why he didn’t also condemn Fernandes for his hop, skip and a stutter before taking each spot-kick, what is Johnstone meant to do?

The Baggies stopper came out and questioned that through the week, but all of a sudden, it was all his fault rather than Fernandes’.

Another thing wrong with this is the number of Red Devils’ players encroaching into the box before the penalty was even taken.

We know the rules, but the sooner they are made clearer and are properly enforced, the better for everyone involved in the Premier League.
