Kamil Grosicki explains WBA U23s inclusion v Sunderland, admits Slaven Bilic didn’t watch

West Brom winger Kamil Grosicki has confirmed that he asked to be included with the under-23s against Sunderland on Monday.

The young Baggies won 3-1 and the Polish international scored twice as Deon Burton utilised the senior squad.

Grosicki has been left out in the cold since his move to Nottingham Forest, and his return to the Premier League squad doesn’t seem to be closer.

The Pole explained his inclusion in the academy side and also admitted that Slaven Bilic wasn’t watching despite his interest in his younger players.

“I asked to perform in this match because I do it for myself,” he said, via Birmingham Live.

“He [Slaven Bilic] didn’t watch the game, but there were his assistants and a sports director. They are interested in a youth team, where they can also play three players over 23 years of age.”

Grosicki also went on to say that he isn’t sure whether or not he is any closer to the first-team set-up as he bids to keep his fitness levels up.

It seems strange that Bilic wasn’t there to take in the action, especially given that he had up to five first-teamers involved.

Rekeem Harper, Kyle Edwards, Matt Phillips and Charlie Austin all featured against the Mackems with two of those also claiming assists.

The 32-year-old was superb and is showing all the right signs despite the disappointment of missing out on a move away this summer.

Many Baggies fans were left calling for the winger to be brought back into the squad for the Crystal Palace game this weekend – something which appears unlikely given Bilic’s notable absence.
