‘Laughable’ – Ian Wright slams controversial incident in West Brom defeat v Palace
Ian Wright has claimed that the sending off of West Brom playmaker Matheus Pereira was “laughable” against Crystal Palace.
The Brazilian was sent off for kicking out at Patrick Van Aanholt, and it led to the Baggies being easily beaten 5-1 at the Hawthorns.
Slaven Bilic had no complaints about the decision and claimed that Pereira gave the officials the chance to show him his marching orders.
Wright believes it was never a red-card offence, and that Van Aanholt made it look much worst than it actually was with his screaming reaction.
“I can’t see the red card in it,” he said on Match of the Day 2. “That’s meant to be a red? He’s not hurt, it’s just another player screaming.
“You can hear him screaming. For me, it’s getting to a point where it’s almost laughable. Van Aanholt carries on playing, but Pereira is sent off. The referee has to look back at it and say ‘get on with it’.”
There will always be different reactions, but the only thing that concerns us is the three-match ban that is facing Pereira.
Pereira will now miss important games against Newcastle, Manchester City and Aston Villa, and he must know better than that.
Van Aanholt must also be condemned for his reaction. The Dutchman wasn’t hurt one little bit, and his reaction was what will have provoked the officials to re-check.
Both players have shown the bad and the ugly of football, but the reality is, Pereira is the only one who has to face the consequences.
