‘Watches every game’ – West Brom in constant touch with shining loanee catching the eye

West Brom keeper Alex Palmer has certainly caught the eye during his loan spell with Lincoln City this season.

The 24-year-old signed a new deal at the Hawthorns before moving to Sincil Bank and is impressing Michael Appleton in-between the sticks.

The Baggies signed David Button in the summer and decided they wanted more experience to partner Sam Johnstone in the first-team squad.

That hasn’t deterred Palmer though.

Speaking to the Athletic, the keeper has revealed that he is in constant contact with the Baggies as he looks to earn a spot in the squad next season.

“Gary Walsh, the goalkeeping coach, watches every game and he’s able to give me any feedback he thinks I need,” he said.

“It’s just a case of him ringing if there’s something he wants to point out or if he wants to see how I’m doing but there’s no set structure to it. They’ve always got tabs on me and whenever Walshy rings me up he always tells me the staff are asking how I’m doing.”

It was a strange move by Bilic this summer.

There was no need to bring in another keeper, especially when it was clear that Johnstone would keep his spot in the side at the Hawthorns.

Palmer would have been the perfect replacement option and would have earned valuable experience in the Carabao Cup and FA Cup with the Baggies.

Button has demanded Premier League wages after arriving from Brighton, and Palmer will have learned a lot from the top-flight experience at The Hawthorns.

Walsh and the Albion clearly rate Palmer very highly, but this loan move could have been a big mistake in regards to his career in the midlands.
