‘Bizarre’ – Ally McCoist delivers verdict on major Bilic update emerging from West Brom
Ally McCoist has said that West Brom sacking Slaven Bilic would be “harsh” and added it was “bizarre” timing after the Baggies battled to a 1-1 draw with Man City last night.
McCoist was reacting to a report in the Telegraph that said Bilic was set to be sacked “in the next 24 hours”.
Journalist John Percy said that he “will be the first Premier League casualty of the season.”
Talking on the Breakfast show (talkSPORT, Wednesday, 7am), McCoist said, “I think it’s harsh, I don’t think anyone could say there hasn’t been a bit of improvement there.
“I watched last night and there was absolutely no evidence of a side that wasn’t playing for their manager, or playing with pride.
“£20m in the Premier League is nowhere near enough to invest in a team that’s going to stay in the league. It’s harsh, the timing of it is bizarre after the result last night.
“Perhaps they didn’t want to do it before the Man City game, but the timing after a great result is very strange.
“Nothing surprises me, there wasn’t a good vibe coming out of that football club, there just wasn’t a good vibe.”
Bilic binned but what next?
If Bilic is sacked today then it’s obvious that he was a dead man walking going into the Man City game.
Is it the right thing to do? You’ll find fans split on the subject but it’s a classic example of ‘blame the manager’ and ignore any other issues at the club.
McCoist is right when he says that £20m is a tiny amount of money to rebuild a Championship squad.
Leeds spent £100m and are still struggling in a really tough league.
Bilic has made mistakes but what manager hasn’t? Karlan Grant hasn’t worked out and perhaps that’s the killer blow for Bilic.
He might not have had much money to spend but the majority of it was on Grant and he’s only scored one goal.
The favourite for the job is Sam Allardyce and whatever his merits, he’ll be seen as a backward step by the fans – a reaction to being in trouble in the Premier League.
When the bat signal goes up for Big Sam, fans know it’s a temporary measure designed to avert the worst happening.
But what then? That’s the big question and we don’t think the current owners have the answer.
