‘Clueless’ – Jonathan Greening tears West Brom to shreds, makes Tony Pulis claim
Jonathan Greening has blasted West Brom for sacking Slaven Bilic and replacing him with Sam Allardyce.
After Tuesday night’s 1-1 draw away at Manchester City, reports emerged that Bilic was set to be sacked and just over 12 hours later, the club announced the Croatian’s departure from The Hawthorns.
Ex-Baggies captain Greening branded Bilic’s sacking as a “****ing clueless” decision in the comments on the club’s official Instagram account.
Later in the day, Allardyce was announced as Bilic’s successor, suggesting that Albion had already lined up the former England manager.
Greening was also unhappy with Allardyce’s arrival.
“Might as well [have] brought Tony [Pulis] back,” said the ex-Albion midfielder.
He added that’s he’s “not really” a fan of Allardyce, “but let’s hope he can keep us in the Prem”.
West Brom anything but clueless
Bilic’s sacking has led to a lot of anger from Albion supporters but if the decision was made before the Man City game, would the reaction have been different?
According to The Athletic journalist Steve Madeley, the issue of COVID-19 testing meant that it was difficult to sack Bilic between the Newcastle and Man City matches while appointing a caretaker from outside of the Baggies’ bubble would have been problematic.
That explains why Bilic went after the Man City game, but it still doesn’t feel right.
However, when you look at it, Bilic has won one of 13 matches in the Premier League this season. In fact, if you go back to last season, he’d overseen just four wins in 24 league games.
Simply put, that isn’t good enough.
We can moan all we like about Guochuan Lai’s ownership and shout ‘sack the board’. But that’s not going to change anything. The board won’t sack itself and Lai is an absent owner, so he’s not going to do it.
West Brom are serious relegation contenders and getting in a manager who’s proven he can keep teams in the Premier League is anything but clueless.
In other West Brom news, a banner about Guochuan Lai has been attached to the Astle Gates.
