‘This is urgent’ – These West Brom fans thrilled by ‘clever’ decision from Allardyce
Sam Allardyce has confirmed James Morrison will be joining his backroom staff at West Brom, in one of his big early decisions at the Hawthorns.
The club confirmed the news on Friday, with Robbie Stockdale also joining Allardyce’s coaching team.
After hanging up his boots in 2019, Morrison had been working with the club’s academy, so steps up to the first-team squad as a familiar face.
Stockdale worked with Allardyce during his time at Sunderland and joins Sammy Lee and goalkeeping coach Gary Walsh behind the scenes.
Seeing Morrison join up with the first-team squad was the good news that West Brom fans needed after a difficult week for the club.
Morrison was very much a fans’ favourite during his playing days, making 341 appearances during his 12 years at the club.
He arrived from Middlesbrough back in 2007 and did not look back, enjoying two promotions and nine seasons of Premier League football with the Baggies.
Some fans were quick to label the move a ‘pr stunt’ from Allardyce, who has brought in a familiar face that he knows the supporters will love.
While it may only be exactly that, Morrison is someone who will have had hands-on training ground experience with these players and can provide extra insight to the management team.
With Allardyce no doubt keen to hit the ground running, any added advantage he can give himself is surely good news for the Baggies.
Albion start life under Allardyce on Sunday at home to Aston Villa before travelling to Anfield next Sunday.
Here are some of the best reactions from a selection of West Brom supporters on social media after the news was announced.
