Exclusive: Kevin Phillips shares what Joe Cole told him about Big Sam after West Brom arrival
We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…
New West Brom manager Sam Allardyce places a lot of importance on having a goalscorer in his side, according to what Joe Cole told Kevin Phillips.
Cole played for Allardyce in his second spell at West Ham in between 2013 and 2014. However in both seasons he was at Upton Park playing for Big Sam, midfielder Kevin Nolan finished twice as the Hammers’ top goalscorer.
West Brom have struggled to get among the goals in the Premier League and even last season in the Championship, there was no stand-out goalscorer for Albion. Charlie Austin ended as the club’s top goal-getter with 11 goals in all competitions.
But that will have to change this season if Albion are to benefit from Allardyce’s style of play.
“I was talking to Joe Cole and he was telling me how Sam Allardyce likes a goalscorer,” Phillips told West Brom News.
“His teams tend to sit in and hit teams on the counter-attack so you need a goalscorer in your side.”
Karlan Grant was supposed to be West Brom’s main man in front of goal this season but since his arrival from Huddersfield in October, it is fair to say that the 23-year-old has struggled.
Callum Robinson, Matheus Pereira and Conor Gallagher have also been among the goals for Albion but none of them have shown they are capable of hitting double-digits this season in the Premier League.
Either Grant has to up his game under Allardyce or Big Sam will look to someone else in the squad to spearhead the attack – like Robinson or Austin.
However, the January transfer window opens in a couple of weeks’ time.
It will be interesting to see whether any moves are made for a new striker next month.
In other West Brom news, Stan Collymore has reacted to Allardyce’s admission about Wolves in his first Albion press conference.
